Student Directed Seminars

By Shannon O’Rourke

Tailor a course specific to your academic interests. Apply now to coordinate a Student Directed Seminar. This is your opportunity to propose, plan and facilitate a 3-credit seminar course for your peers.

To coordinate a Student Directed Seminar, students propose a course not currently available at UBC. If a professor agrees to sponsor the proposal, the student develops a course outline under their guidance. If approved by the Student Directed Seminars Advisory Committee, the course then becomes available for students to take as an upper-level 3-credit course.

Keep in mind that the application deadline to coordinate a Student Directed Seminar is April 1st.

Previous Student Directed Seminars have represented some of the most cutting-edge fields of discovery and research from a variety of academic disciplines.

Coordinating a Student Directed Seminar opens up an academic environment to discuss topics that are not offered at UBC in a course setting.

Jeremy McElroy, a past coordinator of a Student-Directed Seminar titled “Journalism in the 21st Century” feels that Student Directed Seminars give students the chance to take control of their own educational experiences. In his Ubyssey article, McElroy states, “Our motto is Tuum Est. That means “it’s yours,” but it also means “it’s up to you”–a wonderfully true split meaning. This university is here for the taking, if you know how. There’s no better example than Student Directed Seminars.”
