BRAINS BEHIND THE WORK

Tell us about the team you work with. What do you admire about them?

I am lucky enough to work with an incredibly creative team of staff and faculty. Finding different ways to do the impossible is a regular daily task for us and I am constantly impressed by our team’s agility as they tackle the myriad of odd requests that come our way.

LIFE OUTSIDE OF WORK

What is a secret talent you are really proud of?

Although I stepped away from acting professionally a few years ago, I still enjoy getting back in front of the camera or on the stage a few times a year. Each year, a few of us perform in a fundraiser for a student scholarship that focuses on the plays of Samuel Beckett (Beckett 24 in May), and I still work with film directors I met from my university days because it is so much fun and not ‘work’ at all when we get together.

My other secret talent is making slow cars just a little bit faster. I started racing in autocross over 20 years ago, and while no one is signing me up for Formula 1 – it is more fun than a round of golf and has led to some precision driving in a couple of car commercials filmed in town. I recently had a chance to autocross a fully electric EV and can attest that the future is here quickly!

WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE

What is your fondest memory at UBC?

Many years ago, as a student, I met my future wife in an acting class. Many years after that we were married on the stage of the Frederic Wood Theatre. It’s still the best show I have ever been involved in and we continue to extend the ‘run’ some 25 years later…

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I can’t stress enough how just a little laughter can lift the darkest days. I try to find some humour every day and share that with the people around me.

An Appreciative Shout-Out from Linda Pitt

“Cam is the heart of our department, effortlessly blending humour, kindness, and efficiency. His knack for problem solving and getting projects off the ground keeps our department sailing along smoothly. And of course, we have to acknowledge his dedicated assistant, Teddy the office dog.”
