Meet BA ’04 grad Myomi Chu: International design

A jet-setting international traveler with an eye for graphic design.

Fresh off the UBC boat in 2004, Myomi planned to take a couple months off to travel to the Philippines, her country of birth, to visit family and friends. Two months became half a year, and before she knew it, she traveled to Hong Kong, Thailand, Germany, Amsterdam, and France. “I was also quite fortunate to have the opportunity to live in Beijing for half a year to study Mandarin and travel around China before doubling back to Manila and finally, returning to Vancouver late 2005” says the intrepid world-traveler. Before she could say “home sweet home,” Myomi packed her bags yet again for nearly a month to live in downtown Toronto.

“Although I was shunned for being an international bum, I did do as much work as I could while I was in town, in between packing for trips. I did contract and temp positions in companies big and small, and found it a great opportunity to test-drive work environments and careers that really appealed to me.”

Now that she’s managed to quell the living-out-of-a-suitcase lifestyle she had grown accustomed to for the past couple years, she started working at an international CA firm. Although not directly related to her majors at UBC, she finds administrative roles a challenging position because of the diversity of roles one can assume in an office – be it a small non-profit or a large-scale corporation. “My education – especially the UBC Arts Co-op Program – is invaluable in that it opened my mind to a broad range of careers open to Arts students. Art History and English majors are no longer automatically relegated to a career in teaching. Instead, there is a vast field of industries one can tap into, including varying roles in corporations, government agencies, private companies, and non-profit sectors.”

“Of course, I’m motivated to pursue work in my field and I am ultimately setting my sights on design: graphics, layouts, logos, websites, I could go on and on and on.” From a young age, arts and design has been Myomi’s hobby and passion. She accepts freelance projects on a limited basis, ranging from charitable fundraisers to business/private clients. As for her interests, “you need only look up from these words and see the world around you to get a glimpse of what keeps my world inspired,” she says.
