Anran Luo shares the career benefits that her Arts internship with an environmental advocacy group brought to her:
Major: International Relations, 4th year
Internship: Green Collar Association
Why did you apply for an Arts Internship?
After completing two co-op work terms as a teacher in Mexico, I was looking to add research and writing experience to my resume before applying for my last co-op term.
As an IR student nearing graduation, I was also interested in exploring the private and non-profit sectors.
Tell us about your internship. What are your responsibilities? What did you enjoy?
I have had the opportunity to conduct my own research and apply knowledge from my coursework to publishing articles for GCA’s web-blog and e-newsletters.
I am currently writing a blog article on Home Star, a new program that offers consumer rebates for home energy efficiency retrofits. I am also writing a collaborative piece on water management and environmental policy.
One of the benefits of a part-time internship is its flexibility. I go to the office once a week for 5 hours and work with co-interns. For the rest of the time, I am able to work from the library to save on commute time.
What are you getting out of the experience? How does it fit in with your future career plans?
My internship with Green Collar Association has not only helped with the development of my analytical and written communication skills, but it has also shown me the inner workings of a non-profit organization.
I have always had an interest in sustainability, but this internship has opened my eyes to the types of job opportunities in the environmental sector. The field is more multifaceted than fundraising and tree planting.
With this new experience on my resume, I have been able to secure an interview for a co-op position as Senior Research Assistant with a prominent government department. This position had specifically asked for non-academic research and writing experience, which my internship provided.
No matter what your cup of tea, I’m sure there is an Arts internship that will be suitable for you!
