First Nations communities across Turtle Island (Canada) have the inherent right to steward their own data, including data that the federal government holds and any other data that pertains to a First Nations community. However, the Federal government has continually placed stipulations on how and when a First Nations community can hold their data.
Further, the federal government has defined what Indigenous data sovereignty is. The talk will discuss First Nations communities having a nation to nation state relationship with the Federal government and the power dynamic that hinders the progress of Indigenous data sovereignty.
