Celebrate multilingualism this Halloween season at UBC’s inaugural Multilingual Horror Film Festival at The Norm Theatre from October 27-31!
Join language programs from across the Faculty of Arts as they screen and discuss their favorite spooky movies from around the world. Most events are free and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Costumes are encouraged throughout the festival!

VIFF: Vampyr (1932)

Vampyr (1932) is an atmospheric horror film that follows a young man who becomes entangled in a village’s eerie struggle against supernatural forces, blending dreamlike visuals with a haunting exploration of vampirism. This event will be facilitated by Associate Professor Kyle Frackman from the Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies.
Additionally, this screening will be accompanied by a world premiere of a new Vampyr score performed live by experimental sound art duo Magazinist.

In 1944 Spain, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world. This event will be facilitated by Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese Alessandra Santos from the Department of French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies (CINE 100 Screening).

In a post-apocalyptic world where a zombie outbreak spreads, the Indigenous inhabitants of a Mi’kmaq reserve discover they are immune, forcing them to protect their community from both the undead and the surviving outsiders.

A pregnant woman seeking refuge in a remote Welsh farmhouse uncovers disturbing secrets, as the boundaries between reality and nightmare begin to blur. This event will be facilitated by Lecturer in Medical Terminology and Latin Antone Lanatà Minard from the Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies.

A pianist becomes entangled in a deadly mystery after witnessing a brutal murder, leading him on a nightmarish descent into the twisted world of a serial killer. This event will be facilitated by Associate Professor of Teaching and Associate Head of Italian Studies Luisa Canuto from the Department of French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies (ITAL 301 course).

A lonely boy forms a strange and haunting bond with a mysterious kid who turns out to be a centuries-old vampire, exploring themes of friendship, isolation, and survival. This event will be facilitated by Swedish Lecturer Lena Karlström from the Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies.
