When we think of monsters, we might conjure up images of horror films: vampires, zombies, werewolves, aliens – creatures that terrify us and threaten our worlds. But are monsters only just there to scare us or can they tell us something about the societies that produce them? This talk will explore the representation and reproduction of monsters in popular culture, literature, and film and ask you to consider who is rendered monstrous and why? Do social and political discourses determine whose bodies are deemed monstrous? Can monsters or monster theories offer us tools or models for social justice?
Arts Prof Talks is part of a series of events in The Compass: Arts Students Engagement Hub. Meet and learn from faculty members from a range of departments who will share their expertise and advice with you through informal, authentic conversation.
