Economics – Associate or full Professor of Teaching

The Vancouver School of Economics (VSE) at the University of British Columbia-Vancouver campus (https://economics.ubc.ca/) invites applications for an appointment in the Educational Leadership stream, at the rank of Associate Professor of Teaching or Full Professor of Teaching, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025. The successful candidate will bring a vision to reform the VSE’s first-year economics offerings, leading the instruction for approximately 4,000 students annually using innovative pedagogical approaches and instructional methods.

 

Applicants must hold a PhD in Economics or a closely related field; they must have a minimum of four years of successful teaching experience in Economics at the university level; and they must also have experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching large classes. Experience implementing innovative pedagogical approaches (including, but not limited to, hybrid, flexible and/or online learning), and contributing to curriculum development is highly desirable. Applicants must also possess a record of teaching and educational leadership necessary to meet the criteria appropriate to the rank of appointment at UBC. [*]

 

The successful candidate will lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive reform of first-year economics instruction at the VSE, adopting or developing a state-of-the-art curriculum, building on existing resources and strengths, and introducing new pedagogical approaches, instructional methods, and technologies as appropriate. They will also contribute to the ongoing curriculum development efforts across all core economics instruction. Faculty members in the Educational Leadership stream are also responsible for providing broad guidance to all VSE instructors on teaching matters, and for fulfilling standard service duties that contribute to the functioning of the School.

  • CV that includes a record of courses taught
  • Statement of teaching philosophy that includes discussion of approaches to first-year economics instruction (no more than 3 pages)
  • Evidence and discussion of teaching effectiveness (no more than 3 pages)
  • Evidence of achievements in educational leadership and discussion of impact beyond your own classroom (no more than 3 pages)
  • Statement (no more than 2 pages) identifying your philosophy of/approach to equity, diversity, and inclusion; your past and potential future contributions to EDI, along with your ability to work with a culturally diverse student body (use specific examples where possible)
  • Optional: To support the materials listed above, you may submit a link to an artifact (e.g., website, video, set of slides, pedagogical tool, etc.) that showcases an aspect of your teaching or contributions to educational leadership

This position is subject to final budgetary approval. The expected pay range over a 12-month period for this position at rank of Associate Professor of Teaching is $13,333 – $15,000/month; or $14,583 – $16,667/month for Professor of Teaching. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Appointment at a senior rank is subject to an additional review process, which must be approved by the President prior to the start of the appointment.
