Support and care for those impacted by Lapu Lapu Day festival tragedy

Dear Arts community,

The devastating and senseless attack at the Lapu Lapu Day festival on April 26 has shocked our communities and continues to weigh heavily on our hearts. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends who lost a loved one due to this violence and our thoughts are with all those who were injured or have been affected by this tragic event.

We join in grief and in support of the Filipino/x community here in the Faculty of Arts, UBC, and beyond. To see the message from the directors and staff at the UBC Asian Canadian and Asian Migration Studies (ACAM) and the Centre for Asian Canadian Research and Engagement (ACRE) please read here.

Through this very challenging time, we urge that we as a community here in the Faculty of Arts care for one another. We encourage students, staff and faculty to check in with each other, be compassionate and patient, and reach out for additional support when needed. Below are resources available to anyone at UBC:

Faculty of Arts-specific resources:

  • Arts advising (if you need assistance regarding missed exams or assignments due to this event)

Student resources:

Faculty and staff resources:

*The UBC President’s Office has noted that the Employee and Family Assistance Program is also being expanded in support of part-time and auxiliary staff who may be impacted.
