Meet BFA ’07 grad Shireen Cotterall: Inspired by surroundings

Shireen intends to continue to inspire and guide young people in tandem with her own artistic endeavors.

Shireen studied visual arts under the guidance of Barbara Zeigler and Philip McCrum, at UBC and Otis Tamasuskas at Queens University.  She graduated in 2007 with a BFA in Visual Arts and a BA Minor in Spanish. Shireen has been developing her practice and experimenting with layering printmaking techniques along with digital technology to into her paintings and prints.

For the past few years, Shireen has been researching environmental issues and these have been a source of inspiration. Her creativity is fuelled by stories in the media and her own personal reflections gathered over the years during her travels and living in five different countries.  Presently, Shireen is exploring several themes stemming from the destruction of the mountain pine beetle and the diminishing number of monarch butterflies. Her mixed media of compiled, abstracted layers reveal the deconstruction of nature and the need for sustainability. Shireen’s work thus creates new and poignant meanings to these environmental issues.

Additionally, Shireen has taught art to school age children in Toronto, Mexico City and Vancouver, creating murals, print installations and various art projects.  She intends to continue to inspire and guide young people in tandem with her own artistic endeavors.
